The Americans still dominate the Chardonnay/Cabernet business for good reasons. They continue to apply their confidence with everything else, especially Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Sparkling wine. The area of Monterey is now recognized as one of the world’s great appellations for Chardonnay wine. The long growing season and cool climate with a constant breeze (sometimes quite windy) creates the ideal conditions, year after year, for great Chardonnay. The fruit acids found in the grapes in Monterey give the wines a certain pineapple/kiwi character that is unique. The Wagner family of Caymus in the Napa Valley owns Mer Soleil.
