Germany
It will be hard for Germany to match the sales it had in Canada during the 1970s and 1980s, but the good news is the wine quality is light years ahead of where it was. Really wonderful Kabinetts and many, many good dry and half dry wines are being made. These are perfect wines for active lifestyles (low alcohol levels) and modern cuisine. When young Nic Weis took over from his father Herman in the late 1990s, he must have wondered how to improve on perfection. His Mosel and Saar Rieslings are absolutely gorgeous examples of the purity and minerality of this wonderful region. His house Riesling (from the vineyards surrounding the winery) is regularly a Wine Spectator best buy and his Piesporter Goldtropfchen is one of the greatest wines in the region.
